Early Intervention

Many people will hear about being in braces multiple times, especially having a Phase 1 and Phase 2 of orthodontic treatment where braces, headgear, and expanders are used. Our doctors will evaluate if braces are needed when your child still has baby teeth in their mouth or if it will be ok to hold off for a single phase of orthodontics. Some of the considerations for an early phase of orthodontics around ages 7-10 are: early loss of baby teeth, not enough space for all the adult teeth, or a jaw growth impalance.

Surgical Orthodontics

Sometimes problems with the teeth are caused by an imbalance of the jaw skeletal structure. Certain cases such as severe underbites or protrusion may be best accomplished with a jaw surgery which can also help with changing asymmetric profiles or underlying breathing issues. Our office has decades of experience working with maxillofacial surgeons in the area to coordinate your treatment as best as possible.

Interdisciplinary Restorative Treatment

There are many facets of dentistry and occasionally your general or restorative dentist will require some teeth to be moved in order to complete your dental work. Orthodontics can make space for restorative implants or protect teeth for future crowns or veneers. As each individual person’s situation is different, we work to communicate with you and your dentist to set a clear path and expectations.

Airway Considerations

The mouth and the jaws not only play a factor in eating and speaking but can also affect breathing. Dentists have been trained to identify signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and take any medical considerations into account when developing an orthodontic plan. Communication with your primary care physician is important to an accurate diagnosis, but orthodontic treatments such as expanders or jaw surgery can have a great improvement in many aspects of quality of life.
